A team from IMDS (Innovative Medical Device Solutions) of Logan, Utah broke the record for the electric bar stool racer class during the annual World of Speed event hosted by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA). The IMDS Racer achieved an average speed of 53.558 mph during its two fastest runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The previous record of 49.972 mph for the Lakester Class barstools was set in 2008.

IMDS is a leading innovator in contract, full-service orthopedic medical device development and manufacturing with headquarters in Logan, Utah. The company takes pride in providing innovation and speed-to-market, a quality that comes to light even with fun projects like the IMDS Racer. IMDS Co-Innovation™ engineers and machinists designed the racer with metal components manufactured on the company’s state-of-the-art CNC machining equipment. The IMDS team began work towards this goal in March of 2008, and the team’s 2008 racer achieved an encouraging average speed of 34.499 mph. Work on the 2009 racer began in April, with the planned improvements of a more powerful motor, more sophisticated motor control circuits, a more streamlined driver position, and custom-made CNC machined chassis and wheels.

Strict specifications for the bar stool racers are set by the USFRA, including limitations on maximum power (12 Volt DC), tire diameter (10 inches), minimum seat height (30 inches), maximum wheel track width (23 inches), and maximum wheelbase (21 inches). A thorough list of specifications and more information about the races can be found at www.saltflats.com/barstool.html.

In addition to IMDS, sponsors for the IMDS Racer included Suncrest Homes of Antioch, California; Bridgerland Applied Technology College (BATC), Fastenal, Precision Industries, Royal Wholesale Electric, National Battery Sales and Cache Valley Plating, all of Logan, Utah; New Hampshire Ball Bearings of Peterborough, New Hampshire; and Scott Sealing & Striping of Gardnerville, Nevada.
