Minimally Invasive Instrument Set for Total Knee Replacement
Challenge
A customer expressed the need for a minimally invasive instrument set for total knee replacement. Thirty sets would be required in four months, with a full launch following three months later. The set was comprised of 20 different products that included cutting guides and complex assemblies. The instrument designs were at a concept stage, requiring further input from the team of designing surgeons.
Solution
The IMDS Product Sourcing team performed a comprehensive design for manufacturability review (DFM). A pre-production meeting was held to review the proposed changes and to finalize quality and regulatory requirements.
Results
Delivery of the initial 30 sets was complete on time, and the full launch occurred as scheduled. Demand increased, so IMDS assembled a dedicated cell for the production of the complete instrument set.
Due to early involvement, IMDS was able to bring a sophisticated instrument set to market in six months from concept drawings through launch. Integrating the DFM input into the design prior to finalizing the drawings reduced the time needed for processing engineering changes, enhanced the process development time and aided in meeting budget requirements for our partner company.
