Minimally Invasive Instrument Sets
Challenge
A major orthopedic company asked IMDS Product Sourcing to manufacture new minimally invasive instruments. The request was for prototypes to be followed by quantities to support a full international launch.
Solution
Our engineers worked closely with our partner company’s product development engineers, providing input on the design for manufacturability.
We were awarded the contract to manufacture the complete instrument set with requirements of 100 sets a month. A set consisted of 28 different products, some which were complex assemblies. The products were manufactured complete, including non-sterile packaging. To assure both on-time delivery and quality, a lean manufacturing cell was established to manufacture these products. All processes were completed within this team to produce these products.
Results
The collaboration of our team and our partner company’s engineers was so successful that we were invited to most meetings involving the clinical surgeons to assure changes they might request could be added or altered with minimal cost. This process was very successful, and we had products through clinical evaluation and a design set for production in a very short time.
The team was successful in hitting all launch requirements and had the very highest quality rating of suppliers for the partner company. IMDS was also recognized for exceeding the partner’s expectations for price reduction over the 12-month period following launch.
